134.089 Electronic Structure of Solids and Surfaces (Modul 7 Modellierung und Simulation) - 3.0 ECT - Prof. P. Mohn, Prof. J. Redinger, Prof. F. Mittendorfer - SS 14

1. What happens when you cut a surface bare and clean? -> Relaxation and Reconstruction.
Which bond does reconstruction? -> Covalent (Metallic bond does relaxation). Explain.
How else does the surface change, especially in metals? -> There are fewer next neighbors, so the charges get smeared and dipoles are induced, which make a force towards the inside of the bulk.
2. How do you measure the vibrations? -> Spectral measurement (vibration spectra, infrared).
Explain how this works, and what it is you are measuring. -> Mention the harmonic approximation, you measure the frequencies. And also talk about the equations of motion, and that they get coupled, and you solve them with the dynamical matrix and diagonalization of it.
3. A single particle has a flat energy band. What about a periodic system? -> Explain the Bloch theorem, and write the Bloch plane waves, and the Bloch factor. The overlapping of the single bands from all the particles makes a band structure. Talk about dispersion relation, where it comes from and so on.
4. Continuing from above, how do you get to the density of state DOS? -> Explain what DOS is (number of available state in a small energy interval), and what you can learn from it.
Is the DOS of a flat band small or large? -> It’s large. That’s why d orbitals have large DOS plots, while s orbitals have smeared but rather small DOS.
5. What happens when a bulk is created from single particles? -> Explain the binding and antibinding system, the frontier orbitals, how the energy is lowered with the binding.
How do you understand the binding of a molecule on surface with this picture? -> Draw the orbital levels; explain LUMO and HOMO, their contribution.
In a surface the states are very degenerate and closely packed. Why is it possible even for an empty state to bind with surface? Because there are a lot states, it’s possible for it to bind with level and get shifted down below the Fermi energy, which then makes it a stable binding state.
Explain how binding lowers the energy. -> When 2 particles have energy 1 and 2, their bond creates a bonding and antibonding state. Bonding state has lower energy and is more favorable.
6. In the transition metals, when you start from left and go to right, what is the trend of the bulk modulus and volume? Why?
Starting from Sc the bulk modulus increase till Mn and Fe. Ideally Mn should have the largest, but because of S electrons, there is a shift, and Fe also has a large bulk modulus. This is the middle, meaning that all the binding states are now occupied. From here the antibinding states also start to get occupied and this decreases again the bulk modulus. So Co is less stiff than Fe and Zn is rather soft. Bulk modulus is directly related to the strength of the bonds. So, starting from Sc, the volume decreases till Fe, then increases again.
7. Explain transition state theory TST.
We have 3 assumptions: 1. The transitions only happen in one direction. 2. The thermodynamical relation between reactants and transition state is governed by Boltzmann distribution. 3. There is no quantum tunneling. These all result in the reaction ratio depending exponentially to the activation energy, via the coefficient f (or ν), which is the attempt frequency.

20 Pkt.
4. Was ist der Toleranzfaktor? 10 Pkt.

23.01.13

1a) Was sind Hybridgewebe, welche Arten gibt es?
1b) 2 flächige (andere Gruppe linienförmige) Faserhalbzeuge beschreiben (KEINE Prepregs!)
2a) Polymere Matrixmaterialien aufzählen, 1 näher beschreiben
2b) Was ist "nasses" und "trockenes" Ablegen?
3) 3 Herstellungsverfahren nennen, 1 näher beschreiben
4a) Faserverbundgesetz aufschreiben, Komponenten erklären
4b) Welche Versagensformen gibt es?
5) 3 NDT Methoden nennen, 1 näher beschreiben

Was angeblich immer kommt: Faserverbundgesetz

Keep calm and learn material science
